Sen. Hawley “Flips The Script” Calls For Ethics Investigation Into Democrats That Filed Complaints Against Him and Sen. Cruz
Fox News reports that “Sen. Josh Hawley Monday slammed the Democratic senators who filed an ethics complaint against him and Sen. Ted Cruz over their Electoral College objections on Jan. 6 – and continued to defend his decision to object to electoral votes during the joint session to certify” the votes.
In a letter to Sen. Lankford and Sen. Coons –the heads of the Senate Committee on Ethics – Sen. Hawley called the ethics complaint filed against Sen. Hawley and Sen. Cruz “unprecedently frivolous and improper.”
Hawley wrote that Democrats “without citing any relevant evidence or offering any good-faith argument, attempted to link [his] objection lodged under 3 U.S.C. 15 to the criminal riot at the Capitol that occurred on January 6.” He accused the Democrats of submitting “their meritless complaint in partisan and dark-money groups that have peddled falsehoods about [his] and [his] objection.
“By knowingly submitting a frivolous complaint to accomplish impermissible partisan purposes, these Senators have engaged in improper conduct that may reflect upon the Senate,” writes Sen. Hawley. Hawley urges that “the Committee should discipline these Members to ensure that the Senate’s ethics process is not weaponized for rank partisan purposes.”
Sen. Hawley argues that the ethics complaint against him and Cruz ” does not suggest” that his objection was in any way “legally improper” as his objection was protected under federal law. He said that “in every presidential election since 2000 that a Republican won, Democrats have sought to object to electoral votes on that ground, regardless of whether any good-faith basis existed for such objections.” He rightfully assumes that his “objection” should not be held to a higher standard than that of Democrats that has “invoked” this same “lawful process” multiple times.
Senator Hawley defends his objection to the Pennsylvania electoral votes saying, “Moreover, there is a strong level basis to believe that Pennsylvania’s electoral votes were not regularly given. Indeed, it appears that Pennsylvania conducted the 2020 general election using a mail-voting scheme that violated the Commonwealth’s Constitution. That’s not just my opinion: while no judge has concluded that the mail-voting system was valid, multiple members of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court expressed substantial doubt about the validity of the statute.”
He said that while his “Democrat colleagues” may have a different opinion reading Pennsylvania law but his “objected rested on far more solid ground than the electoral college objections submitted by Democrat Members of Congress after the 2000, 2004, and 2016 elections.” Hawley said that rather than filing ethics complaints against their colleagues that objected to electoral votes of Republican presidents, “they offered pecans to them.”
Sen Hawley: “For the foregoing reasons, I respectfully request that the Committee investigate the conduct of Senators Whitehouse, Wyden, Smith, Blumenthal, Hirono, Kaine, and Brown in preparing and filing this baseless and destructive complaint.”
Sen. Hawley is a fighter, and fighters will continue to thrive in the new GOP. We are cleaning out the establishment and replacing them with Hawley-like Congressmen. Sen. Cruz needs to fight back with the same veracity or be left in Hawley’s dust.
